Alexander van Tienhoven

Mr. van Tienhoven is Head of Wealth Management for Latin America and the Caribbean of UBS AG.

In a distiguinshed career spanning nearly 28 years at Citibank NA and until March 2015, he was responsible for the Citi Private Bank, Citigold Private Client, Banamex Banca Privada & Patrimonial, Citigold International and International Personal Banking businesses for Mexico and Latin América. He was also responsible for the Asset Management, Brokerage (Accival), Retirement (Afore Banamex), Insurance (Seguros Banamex) and Trust businesses in the region.

Among the different businesses, Mr. van Tienhoven was responsible for nearly 200,000 wealth management relationships, 8 million retirement accounts, 1.1 million insurance policies and 6,000 employees.

Since 2000, he was Managing Director and General Manager of Citi Private Bank, Mexico. In 2002, Mr. van Tienhoven was given the mandate to integrate the Banamex Private Bank into the Citi Private Bank. In 2005, he was appointed President of Citi Private Bank Latin America.

In 2009, he consolidated all Wealth Management businesses in Latin America and, in 2010, was given responsibility for the asset management, fiduciary, retirement fund and insurance companies in the region.

He served as Vice President and General Manager (CCO) of Citibank Portugal, S.A. from 1996 thru 1999 in addition to participating on the Management Committee of Citibank Spain. Prior to that, he was Vice President and Global Relationship Bank Head based in Mexico from 1994 to 1996. In that position he was responsible for corporate and investment banking for multinational customers and led the Chemical and the Consumer Industry groups.

Mr. van Tienhoven received a B.S.E. from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1987 and attended the Stanford University Business School Executive Program in 1999 .

He is a U.S. citizen who grew up in Argentina and has lived in several cities in the U.S., Latin America and Europe. He speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Alex is a member of the Board of Banco Finterra, a Director of the Americas Society / Council of the Americas, Board member of the Wharton School Latin America Executive Board, and Fundacion Internacional para la Libertad.

He has served on a number of Boards, such as Banco Nacional de Mexico, Aeromexico, Fundación Mexicana para la Salud (Funsalud), San Luis Rassini (autoparts) and Garante (private pension fund management).

He is a regular columnist on Valor Magazine and Forbes Latin America.
